Pete Duel : A Biography

Reviews

FRANK PRICE - former President of Universal TV and Columbia Pictures
"It is not the usual superficial adoring screen bio. I am impressed with the depth of the portrait. There is a serious psychological study in the narrative of his life. The book makes its comment on the human condition and does it without appearing to."

PAMELA DEUEL JOHNSON & RICHARD P. JOHNSON
"I am proud to be associated with this book. It is wonderfully written. Hats off to you, Paul. You have certainly hit the mark, indeed!"

DONALD FANNING - close friend
"Congratulations on all the work you put into Peter's biography. To use an overworked phrase it was indeed "fair and balanced". It would be well nigh impossible to capture all of the facets of Pete's behavior in life. None of us could truly figure him out over many years, however, I'm thankful you took the time to talk with us about what we knew and how we felt about Peter.
The only remaining truth about the death of Peter Deuel is that he is no longer here, and we miss him.
Thank you for writing the book."

KIM DARBY - actress, teacher and former girlfriend
"I am so glad this book was written. I know that Peter would have wanted it written in order to have some closure for the people he left behind.
I love the book and think it is handled with a great amount of dignity and good taste. There is a tremendous amount of work within the pages and it is very close to me.
It was wonderful that Paul talked to so many people who knew Peter. He got as close to Peter as anybody could get. The integrity is there for all to see. It was recorded as it happened."

BETH GRISWOLD - former girlfriend
"Thank you, Paul, for writing this biography of Peter. And thank you for your diligence in contacting so many of his friends after all this time had passed. I feel I understand him so much better than my memories alone had allowed me.
As a study of the complexity of human personality, how we interact and affect each other, Peter's intense and tragic story serves well to expose the volatility and impulsiveness of our early adult years and the lasting effects someone has on others' lives. I can see the patterns of experience that held fairly constant with Peter when I look at the similarities and character qualities of each of your contributors who knew Peter intimately.
We all share the fact that Peter affected our lives greatly, that we still remember much of our time with him fondly and that we were all deeply saddened and scarred by his choice. Once again, Peter's celebrity may serve a dual purpose; because of his celebrity you wrote down his story - because you wrote down his story, we have the ability to know more completely the human being behind the celebrity."

JILL ANDRE - actress, director and former girlfriend
"Congratulations on completing this complicated project. I know you have brought so much meaning to many people as you so creatively put this all together. Thank you for the honesty and care which you have given to each of us."

DIANNE RAY - former girlfriend
"Thanks for all your hard work. Peter would have appreciated it and so do I. Hope your book gets a huge response. Both you and Pete deserve it."

C. DAVEY UTTER - close friend
"Peter was a dear friend and we tore it up together every chance we got, so here’s to Pete, and here’s to your book, and here’s to those of us who don’t have the courage to pull the trigger when things go terribly wrong. I wish Peter was one of us!"

WESTERN CLIPPINGS 9/3/07 : 'On The Western Bookshelf'
"Paul Green's PETE DUEL : A BIOGRAPHY explores his life and death, and does it exceedingly well....Green's bio is a must."

ANSWERS FOR THE FAITH : 1/21/08
"For me, the best part of the book was the ‘Testimony’ chapter where many of his closest friends were able to reflect upon their own feeling and reactions to Peter’s life and death after all these years. It is a study in those who are left behind to pick up the pieces of their lives when one decides to end it all. A valuable lesson for all who think that suicide is the easiest way out."

A personal message to readers from Pamela Deuel Johnson

"My family and I have found it so unpleasant and unfortunate that there has been such criticism of my brother's biography by Paul Green. The very fact that I was involved and aware of all that Paul was writing from the beginning of his project should validate the information in Paul's well researched book.

Peter was a very complex and sensitive man. The manner in which his life ended was horrible and affected deeply our entire family to this day.
We only wish our wonderful Peter had survived his dark and tumultuous times. As his sister, not only do I believe his career would have placed him at the pinnacle of the acting profession, but more importantly, his very life of peace and fulfillment would have been his greatest gift to all of us, and to himself.

Hopefully, in reading this, all of his devoted fans for these many years, who we appreciate so very much, will accept the authenticity of Mr. Green's book. I found Paul Green to be a man of integrity, honesty, and possessed a great love for Peter. In remembering Peter may we accept the tragedy but most of all take joy, though bittersweet, in the great light that shone through him, though too brief it was. Thank you for reading this and for your years of keeping my beautiful brother Peter alive in our hearts.

Most sincerely,

Pamela Deuel Johnson"
